Patterns, not single sounds

Phonology

When a child swaps sounds in a predictable way - every K coming out as a T, every ending dropped - that is a phonological process, and it is usually a stage rather than a problem. Pick one to see what it sounds like, when it should sort itself out, and pairs of words to practise with.

What is a phonological process?

A phonological process is a recurring way a child changes sounds while speech is developing. It is a pattern across words, such as saying “tea” for “key” and making similar front-for-back changes in other words. An SLP looks at the whole speech sample and the child’s languages and dialects before deciding whether a pattern needs support.

Substitution

One sound or sound class takes the place of another.

Syllable structure

A sound, cluster, or syllable is omitted or added.

Assimilation

A sound becomes more like another sound in the same word.

Vowel changes

A vowel shifts toward a different tongue position; persistent or unusual changes need individual review.

Typical developmental processes

Most children use some of these. They matter when they last longer than they should.

Fronting

Sounds made at the back of the mouth get replaced by sounds made at the front.

Atypical processes

These patterns deserve closer review in a full speech sample. An SLP can consider the child’s language and dialect background when evaluating them.
